Skin Disorders

The skin contains many specialized cells and structures and is ever-changing. It is the largest organ in our body.  It is part of our immune system and functions as a protective barrier, protecting us from bacteria. Although bacteria live all over the planet and we may come in contact with them frequently, a strong immune system will kill the bacteria.

There are many types of bacteria that can infect the skin. The most commonly known are Staphylococcus aureus, Mycobacterium, and Tinea Pedis (known as “athletes foot”).  Less common bacteria may cause skin infections in hospitals, nursing homes and in people who garden or swim a lot.                                    

Because of poor circulation in the lower extremities and a reduced ability to fight infection, people with diabetes are at greater risk for nail fungus. People with immune disorders or those undergoing chemotherapy are at greater risk of infection due to a poor immune system. Trauma, over exposure to water and chronic picking or rubbing of the skin all present unique opportunities for bacteria. Scratches, cuts, nicks, and cracks due to dry skin can allow bacteria to enter in through the skin.

Prevention involves keeping the skin clean and free from cracks or injury. Using natural bacteria fighting products and early prevention is key to stopping any bacteria in it’s tracks.
