Shaving legs Increase Risk

We recommend pedicure clients avoid shaving their legs or having any other type of hair removal performed at least 24 hours prior to a pedicure.  At least one third of those infected in the northern California outbreaks had shaved their legs prior to their pedicures.

With high concentrations of mycobacteria growing in biofilm and circulating through foot spas, clients with breaks or cuts in their skin were the most likely to be infected.  Though not readily visible, breaks or cuts in the protective layers of the skin are still large enough to  provide a ready route for the mycobacteria to enter the body.
